A Positive Facebook Discussion with a Pro-Choice Person

Dusting off the blog because I had an amazing conversation on Facebook the other day, and I just had to share it. I think this is the first time I've had a conversation with a pro-choice person on Facebook where the person actually considered my points and my evidence, and freely admitted when her assertions were wrong. It's a Year of Mercy miracle!

This happened on a friend's wall, not my own, so I've blacked out the pro-choice person's comments in black and the comments of all other participants in red. The very last comment comes from the friend on whose wall this conversation took place.

This conversation is long (twenty-four screenshots!), but I think it's worth reading.

  1. Very good discussion. I think this is great for people who really don't understand our point of view. I get that people aren't going to agree about every issue, but at the very least we should acknowledge what the other side is saying. Often I say something and they simply say "you're wrong." It's so frustrating. Why would I lie? With abortion it's all about "slut shaming" and "forced pregnancies" and junk like that. No, I'm not doing any of those things. I'm totally against rape for one thing. Nope this about the unborn. It has less to do with whether or not the mother didn't exhibit great judgement or not.

Oh, and I thought you should know that sometimes "Sara" is said in the comment itself. I wasn't sure if you were intending to black those out or not. I don't think it makes much of a difference. Too many people named Sara.

    1. Yeah, I noticed that after the fact. I tried to block out all instances but I was trying to wrangle kids at the same time so I kept getting distracted. Hopefully it is anonymous enough... Sara is such a common name that I doubt anyone could identify her just from that.

  2. Wow!! What a read! You are amazing! I love how on top of every comment you were! Way to go JoAnna! Loved it! Respect. It's the way to open the dialog and that's the only way to open people's hearts....one at a time...

  5. That was very well done, JoAnna! I'm so glad that Sara was willing to rethink her position. It is so much harder to read a discussion when the pro-choice person concedes that it's a human being, but goes on to say that they would not protect that human being from even the most heinous methods of abortion. Both people (Sara and a person who admits that they are defending murder, but doesn't mind that they are) are being honest about their positions, but it is chilling to read the second kind of discussion.
